Analyzing Cockpit Interfaces Using Formal Methods
Modern passenger aircraft are highly automated, and problems at the interface between the automation and the pilot are implicated in several accidents. I use a simple example taken from the autopilot of a widely used aircraft type to demonstrate how formal methods can be used to analyze some aspects of these interfaces, and to expose potential problems. This example serves to illustrate the wid...
متن کاملLayout Design of a Furniture Production Line Using Formal Methods
This paper experiments application of different heuristic approaches to a real facility layout problem at a furniture manufacturing company. All the models are compared using AHP, where a number of parameters of interest are employed. The experiment shows that formal layout modelling approaches can be effectively used real problems faced in industry, leading to significant improvements.
متن کاملFormal Methods for Specifying and Analyzing Complex Software Systems
Software has been a major enabling technology for advancing modern society, and is now an indispensable part of daily life. Because of the increased complexity of these software systems, and their critical societal role, more effective software development and analysis technologies are needed. How to develop and ensure the dependability of these complex software systems is a grand challenge. It...
متن کاملDesigning Aircraft Cockpit Displays: Borrowing from Multimodal User Interfaces
In this paper, we present an approach to design of command tables in aircraft cockpits. To date, there is no common standard for designing this kind of command tables. Command tables impose high load on human visual senses for displaying flight information such as altitude, attitude, vertical speed, airspeed, heading and engine power. Heavy visual workload and physical conditions significantly ...
متن کاملCognitive Systems Engineering (cse) Framework for Evaluating New Cockpit Interfaces
With an increased role of modeling and simulation new cockpit technologies can be thoroughly evaluated before being implemented in an aircraft. This process of evaluation, however, needs to be guided by a framework based on our knowledge of the strengths and limitations of the human operator. Situation awareness (SA) has become the dominant construct used in evaluating new technology. However, ...
